A cancer diagnosis changes everything—from the moment of shock and fear to an unceasing battle for life. In most oncology cases, surgery is a crucial step in fighting cancer. In the most challenging times, rely on the expertise and many years of experience of the A3 Medical surgical team, which employs the latest protocols in oncological surgery and performs all tumor operations in accordance with oncological principles.
At our facility, among other services, an eminent team of surgeons and anesthesiologists perform cytoreductive procedures combined with HIPEC, which involves the hyperthermic application of cytostatics into the peritoneal cavity via a special Belmont pump. This procedure is reserved for advanced stages of cancer (ovary, colon, appendix, stomach) with peritoneal deposits, and more recently also for all seropositive tumors (tumors that have breached the serous membrane—a vital structure that helps maintain the health and function of organs).
As a renowned surgical hospital in Montenegro, we pride ourselves on a multidisciplinary team with extensive experience in performing the most complex operations for advanced-stage cancer using advanced technology and equipment for precise and safe procedures:
Distinguished Expert, Prof. Dr. Ranko Lazović: Head of Surgery, Anesthesia, the OP Block, and CIT, specialist in general surgery and sub-specialist in digestive surgery, and a corresponding member of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences. He is also the recipient of the most prestigious national award, the “Trinaestojulske” Award, for introducing new methods into surgical practice in Montenegro: laparoscopic oncological operations for colon and rectum carcinoma; microwave ablation of metastatic changes in the liver; cytoreductive surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), which encompasses all surgical procedures for removing visible cancer metastases in the abdominal organs and peritoneum as well as the use of heated chemotherapeutic solutions to eliminate microscopic metastases in the abdominal cavity;
Esteemed Gynecologic Oncologist, Prim. Dr. Vesna Čolaković Popović: After many years as a specialist, diligently acquiring experience in gynecology and obstetrics and actively participating in congresses and symposiums—presenting expert works—she earned the title of Primarius. Later, she completed a sub-specialization in oncology at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, thus becoming the first gynecologist with a sub-specialization in oncology in Montenegro. She spent over two decades working at the Gynecologic-Obstetric Clinic of the Clinical Center of Montenegro in Podgorica, initially in the Maternity Ward and subsequently in the Gynecologic Pathology Department following her sub-specialization. She is a member of the Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Montenegro and ESGO (European Society of Gynaecological Oncology).
Experienced and Eminent Specialist in Anesthesia, Resuscitation, and Pain Therapy, Dr. Sci. Med. Dr. Ognjenka Šarenac: She completed her specialization in Anesthesiology with Resuscitology as the top student of her generation at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade. With over 14 years of experience as an anesthesiologist in all surgical fields—primarily thoracic, vascular, digestive surgery, and cytoreductive operations combined with HIPEC, as well as esophageal surgery—and with experience in bariatric anesthesia and other laparoscopic fields, plus expertise in epidural anesthesia in obstetrics. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the systemic inflammatory response in surgical patients and the management of surgical pain. The success of any operation is founded on the expertise of the anesthesiologist, a quality clearly exemplified in Dr. Šarenac’s meticulous work. Every step—from the preoperative patient assessment to the monitoring of vital functions during and after the procedure—is carried out with exceptional precision and care. Her vigilance, quick decision-making, and utmost responsibility make her contribution invaluable to the high-quality and successful work of A3’s expert team.
We proudly emphasize that patients in Montenegro now have access to advanced treatments for the management of advanced-stage cancer thanks to A3 Medical—the only private hospital performing cytoreduction and the HIPEC procedure, a treatment first implemented and continuously perfected in our country by the esteemed Prof. Dr. Lazović, ensuring that all malignant changes are eradicated. Until recently, a diagnosis of advanced-stage cancer (ovarian, colon, appendix, and stomach cancer that had spread to the peritoneum or was seropositive) meant a very poor prognosis for patients. Today, patients have more options, one of which is cytoreduction combined with the HIPEC procedure.
Preoperative preparation involves bringing the patient into optimal condition for surgery, thereby reducing intraoperative stress and enhancing survival. The anesthesiology team, led by Dr. Sci. Med. Dr. Ognjenka Šarenac, implements the latest treatment protocols and state-of-the-art intraoperative patient monitoring. Postoperatively, we apply the ERAS protocol, promoting early patient mobilization and a swift return to daily activities. Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) is administered individually to each patient, ensuring pain is managed with the appropriate dosage of analgesics. Thanks to the introduction of early physical therapy for our patients, postoperative risks are minimized.
The abdomen contains numerous vital organs (liver, intestines, stomach, spleen…), and cancer can spread directly to neighboring organs or via lymphatic and blood vessels to distant parts of the body (metastases), making the surgical treatment of abdominal cancer highly complex. Due to the complexity of the procedure, not every hospital or medical team is capable of performing HIPEC—a highly specialized procedure used to treat advanced-stage cancers that have spread to the peritoneum, the abdominal lining, as well as seropositive tumors—as A3 Medical does.
At A3 Medical, patients benefit from the expertise of outstanding professionals with extensive experience and proven proficiency whose knowledge and dedication contribute to providing superior medical services across different fields.
